The History

The West region is generously marked by Portuguese history, with the passage of time, men and women of this region inherited characteristic features from different people and races who passed and settled here.

The geographical position and the fertility of the land attracted various kinds of people, namely, northern Celts, from the south the Phoenicians, the Romans and the Arabs.

The contact with these people left legacies that did not disappear with time leaving a strong sense of hospitality in this region still visible today.

The various cultures were consolidated for centuries in this region, vineyards, wine making, the unique Rocha pear, the local cherry called Ginja, not mentioning of course the maritime and fishing traditions.

Over the territory the patrimonial assets are vast, there can be found a large diversity of grand historical landmarks.

Archaeological sites traced back to the Palaeolithic age; prehistoric caves such as Nova Columbeira Cave in Bombarral, cave Furninha in South Peniche; the Castros Zambujal in Torres Vedras dating back to the 3rd millennium B.C, beginning of the Copper Age; villages and Roman cities as "civitas Eburobritium", the aqueduct and the castle of Óbidos; thermal hospital in Caldas da Rainha, Roman bridges; churches; the forts of São Vicente de Paimogo in Lourinhã, São João Batista in Berlenga; the fortress in Peniche and more exclusive monuments and relics to be visited.

The Monastery of Alcobaça dated from the XII century and Batalha dated XIV century, World Heritage monuments appointed by UNESCO; Convent of Santa Maria de Cós, S. Francisco Convent in Alenquer, Varatojo and Graça Monastery in Torres Vedras, the magnificent Sanctuary Senhor da Pedra in Óbidos, Nossa Senhora da Nazaré and the Royal Ice Factory in Montejunto, Cadaval.

These epochal centres hold the past of the West region and reveal some of the peoples secrets who played an important cultural roll in the history of Portugal.

DUE TO THE PROXIMITY BETWEEN THE RURAL ENVIRONMENT AND URBAN CENTRES, THESE GREATLY MERGED FEATURES LEAD TO A QUIET AND RELAXED RESIDENTIAL MODEL, PROVIDING AN APPEALING QUALITY OF LIFE AND INCREASINGLY SOUGHT DURING OUR DAYS.
