CALDAS DA RAINHA

Entering the south side of Caldas da Rainha, city of thermal treatments, artistic and cultural costumes, we pass the famous statue of Queen Leonor, who named this city, we visit the main traditional outdoor square, where the variety, freshness and colours of fruits and vegetables catch our eye, next to this square, the hospital with thermal sulphurous waters still are in use for medicinal treatments, also where the Queen was bathed to cure her illnesses.

The garden founded by King D. Carlos I, you can enjoy the different species of vegetation and boat rides in the lake, visit the Museum of José Malhoa, or simply enjoy a drink on the local terrace.

Caldas da Rainha is well known for its pottery, this activity developed increasingly in the region due to the rich clay soils, there are several types of local clay made crafts,  humoristic, decorative, cartoonist and naturalist.

Visit the museum of Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro and observe his artistic art craft works, these pieces stand out for their originality and social criticising of customs and politicians of his time, he created symbolic pieces such as tiles, decorative pottery with fruits, animals, vegetables, flowers and the most popular figure, the Zé Povinho.

The gastronomic level stands out for the local traditional sweets, trouxas-de-ovos, lampreias, cavacas and beijinhos.



FOZ DO ARELHO


In the village of Foz do Arelho, we find not only the fantastic beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean, but also the connection between the salty sea waters and the Óbidos lagoon. The local cuisine is based on various species of mussels and fish caught by in the ocean shore and the lagoon.



O MARTINHO

North of the lagoon following the Atlantic coast, we arrive at the village of São Martinho do Porto, its stunning natural bay shaped as a seashell stands out for recreational purposes and for underwater algae harvesting.

 



NAZARÉ

Continuing along the Atlantic coast, we find the fishing town of Nazaré. By the seashore we can savour the fresh fish, enjoy the fantastic white sandy beach, where we can still see today, the Lady’s with their traditional seven skirts.

Certainly you have to visit some of the heritage monuments and famous sites,the Santuário da Nossa Senhora da Nazaré; Fortress of São Miguel Arcanjo; Monte de S. Brás; Canhão da Nazaré; Lagoa da Pederneira; Serra da Pescaria and Promontório.

Nazaré is known by the giant waves, offering excellent conditions for extreme surfing. Hawaiian surfer McNamara ventured himself and surfed the biggest wave ever, almost with 30 meters, placing the town on the international map for astonishing surf achievements.

Taking the elevator up the cliff we encounter the Sitio of Nazaré, where the privileged view of the lower town, the for ever seashore and Atlantic Ocean makes our day worthwhile.
